Attitude Adjustment
Positive thinking, predisposition and self-esteem play important roles in rehabilitation psychology and physical recovery. This page compliments the Overcoming Hurdles page because when used in tandem both knowledge-bases come in real handy for whole lotta students.
Self-Esteem
Especially in rehab. and recovery self-esteem comes under attack. It is almost like when they body-shame a model. In both cases, the wellness of a human being is at risk. I wrote a Master's Degree mini-thesis on self-esteem dealing with the cultural, social and educational aspects of personal confidence.
Positive Thinking
My brand of positive thinking receives a lot a reinforcement from a realistic, practical and balanced mind-set. Part of how I stay positive and confident is by knowing I have accounted for many negative possibilities. Just because I have negative thoughts does not mean positive thinking has left me resulting in only needless whining. As long as I am honestly trying to create a positive outcome then a bit of skepticism is healthy. Most 'only positive' people do not buy this method because it ruins the manifestation that only positive energy produces positive results. I feel that sincere, gritty positive thinking more authentically takes flight when we nourish it organically, holistically and rationally.
Positive thinking is produced when our environment is stimulating and people are happy. It is best to work with the present rather that trying to think positive about the past or the future. The present moment is highly tangible so positive thinking will be very rewarding if you stick to improving things that are in your mind/environment immediately. Even small things can have a big affect. For instance, simply rearranging the utinsels drawer can lift a cloud of ambient frustration. Try it.
Predisposition
Predisposition functions as the skills I come to play the game with. It's attitude, it's prejudice, it is positive thinking, it is confidence. Sometimes it will manifest as all of the influences that have molded me and my perception them + what I may think, believe, feel and say at a particular moment.
This area of psychology carries a great deal of gravity because our formative years of so critical and carry on a lot longer than people have traditionally accounted for. I have changed my predisposition as I have aged through many stages and life lessons.
With disabilities things get muddied a bit. The best tip that I offer to people is that every time I'm in public I don't always have to live up to being the Poster Boy, Ambassador and Mentor. I only need to be aware, mindful and kind as I navigate through life.
Self-Esteem
We can describe self-esteem as one's sense of competence, worth and/or belonging typically related to a personal trait or aspect of a person's life. For example, usually body-image/mind-set relates to sense of belonging in that a lot of people with self-esteem and/or physical similarities hangout together. Social science demonstrates these generalizations repeatedly with studies. I mention it here because awareness of these connections can be the first step in learning how to build positive esteem.
Rarely talked about and always behind the scenes, self-esteem functions like the proverbial "elephant-in-the-room." If the elephant stays still, predictable and cute everything is great. One little change or movement and sometimes immediate disaster happens.
If we would more mindfully embrace impermanence and embrace the constantly evolving triumphs and tribulations then a stable self-esteem is available.
