About Marty

     Currently, Marty teaches senior citizens Reminiscing in assisted-living retirement homes for Cuesta College in San Luis Obispo, California. After 5 years instructing year-round, Marty is on personal leave until Winter, 2022.
 
     Before returning to California in 2015 he lived in near Hilo, Hawaii for 9.5 years where he developed an independent living project while working part-time as a motivational speaker, assistive technology lab tech. and disability awareness consultant.
 
     Marty was born and raised in Santa Clara, California in the early 1960s.
 
     He earned a Master’s Degree in Education from Cal Poly in 1996 and holds a Bachelors in Philosophy from Santa Clara University 1984.
 
     Back in 1970 and 1971, Marty served as a March of Dimes Birth Defects Foundation National Poster Boy. Since that time has worked in 8 different career positions including at the Federal Communications Commission in Washington D.C. and in small business management.      During his 7+ years promoting the March of Dimes, Marty made 5 short documentaries, met 4 Presidents and appeared in countless newspaper articles and TV spots.

Narrative Biography

     Martin Alan Mimmack was born in 1961 to an Italian Mother (Gloria Fazzi) and an Irish Father (William Mim Mack) in Santa Clara, California. The youngest of six boys, in 1964 Marty served as the Santa Clara County March of Dimes Poster Child. Five years later he was chosen to be their National Poster Boy and then Goodwill Ambassador. In total, Marty's 10 years of service lasted from 1964 to 1981. During those years he met former presidents Carter, Nixon, Ford and Reagan, recorded TV and radio announcements, anchored telethons and served as a media spokesperson among many other appearances nationwide. The organization also featured him in several short film of documentaries: Extra Measure 1964 |  Marty Little 1970 | Arnold Palmer 1971 |  Keep On Walking 1972 | Marco and Me 1981.

     These early experiences paved the way for Marty to begin speaking at youth leadership conferences. He also participated in Junior achievement and was selected as speaker of the year during his senior year (1980) at Cupertino High School in California. That year, Santa Clara University awarded him a speech scholarship for competitive intercollegiate speech forensics. He went on to earn a bachelor's degree in philosophy in 1984. 

     Following graduation, Marty held jobs with Federal Communications Commission in Washington  Washington DC. and as a business manager/bookkeeper for a retail and wholesale packing supplies small business in San Jose, California. 

     In 1992, Marty returned to school to complete a multiple subject teaching credential from San Jose State University. Then, in 1996, he graduated from Cal Poly San Luis Obispo with a Masters Degree in Education with a Specialization in Counseling and Guidance. During his 14 years on the central coast of California Marty owned 2 different homes, served as a disability awareness consultant, substitute teacher, education commission staffer, high-tech specialist, motivational speaker, community volunteer and standup comedian.

     After a short career break, in 2007 Marty moved to Hilo, Hawaii. While it will was a bit of a bucket list relocation, Marty had a chance to set up shop on an independent living project. He quickly put down roots, bought a house and developed a business plan while inviting various people from across the nation to visit him and explore his independent living community startup. While the project was not entirely successful it did afford Marty the chance to test out his theories and practices in an environment that was very demanding and very fun at the same time. Many of the classes and services Marty offers today were sharpen and vetted in real life situations. Marty's house was a fantasy fulfilled, a dream achieved and a lesson learned.

     He returned to San Luis Obispo County, California in 2016. Until the summer of 2021 he continued teaching Reminiscing to 70, 80 and 90-year-olds living in assisted living/memory care homes.      As a bit of a 60th birthday present to himself and others, MartyMimmack.com was launched on May 9th and will have a grand opening October 2021.
He resides in San Luis Obispo County and has multiple congenital anomalies of the upper and lower extremities due to unknown causes.
